Bredgar Volunteer Elliot Jones wins Steam Apprentice Award

Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway volunteer Elliot Jones has won the Steam Apprentice Club’s Volunteer of the Year award.

The award was for someone who gives up their time to volunteer within the road steam movement away from the club, and Elliot was chosen for his work at the railway where he helps with these engines at event days.

Elliot, who is 13, has specific responsibility for looking after the Aveling & Barford steam roller, owned by the railway’s chief engineer Tony Baker.  He keeps it running throughout the day, under Tony’s guidance, whilst talking to members of the public about the engine. Away from event days, he also sometimes helps with cleaning and basic maintenance on the roller.

The winner of the award was announced at the National Traction Engine Trust’s annual meeting at Whitchurch in Shropshire on Saturday. Elliot is pictured receiving his shield from Steam Apprentice Club chairman Paul Stingmore.
